چکیده

The background-oriented schlieren (BOS) technique with the physicsbased optical flow method (OF-BOS) is developed for measuring the pressure field of a laser-induced underwater shock wave. Compared to BOS with the conventional cross-correlation method in PIV (called PIV-BOS), by using the OF-BOS, the displacement field generated by the small density gradient in water can be obtained at the spatial resolution of one vector per pixel. The corresponding density and pressure fields can be further extracted. It is particularly demonstrated that the sufficiently high spatial resolution of the extracted displacement vector field is required in the tomographic reconstruction to correctly infer the pressure field of the spherical underwater shock wave. The capability of the OF-BOS is critically evaluated based on synchronized hydrophone measurements. Special emphasis is placed on direct comparison between the OF-BOS with the PIV-BOS.

The evolution of a shock wave pressure induced by a laser pulse in a liquid filled thin tube using the background-oriented schlieren technique

We investigate an angular variation of pressure at a laser-induced shock front in a liquid filled thin tube. We adopt the background-oriented schlieren (BOS) technique. This technique enables us to measure twoor three-dimensional pressure field in a small region with a simple setup. We obtain the spatiotemporal evolution of the pressure field thanks to an ultra high-speed video camera and a las...

Development of laser-induced grating spectroscopy for underwater temperature measurement in shock wave focusing regions

In Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy (ESWL) underwater shock wave focusing generates high pressures at very short duration of time inside human body. However, it is not yet clear how high temperatures are enhanced at the spot where a shock wave is focused. The estimation of such dynamic temperature enhancements is critical for the evaluation of tissue damages upon shock loading. For this pu...

Single-shot spatially resolved characterization of laser-induced shock waves in water.

We have developed an optical method for single-shot spatially resolved shock-wave peak-pressure measurements. A schlieren technique and streak photography were used to follow the propagation of the shock wave. The shock position r as a function of time was extracted from the streak images by digital image-processing techniques. The resulting r(t) curves were differentiated with respect to time ...

An Optical Measurement System to Measure Velocity and Provide Shock Wave Pressure Diagrams

This paper introduces an optical measurement system for shock wave characteristics. The system works by mountinga metal plate attached to spring mounts against the shock wavefront. This set is sealed and can plot the shock wave pressure diagram by measuring plate's displacement, radiation and changing the reflection of light during shock wave conflict, and converting these optical data to volta...

An evaluation of optical flow algorithms for background oriented schlieren imaging

The background oriented schlieren method (BOS) allows for accurate flow measurements with a simple experimental configuration. To estimate per-pixel displacement vectors between two images, BOS systems traditionally borrow window-based algorithms from particle image velocimetry. In this paper, we evaluate the performance of more recent optical flow methods in BOS settings. We also analyze the i...
